Suzuki violin studio and musiclessonsnh.com have taken to Zoomfor the last two months and it has exceeded expectations.
When the lock-down hit there was some concern for me as to the impact on my lessons and my students. I thought some people would stop lessons or kids would not adjust to the format. I also though I may have trouble conveying technique and tone. I was wrong. Although there is something helpful to being present in a room with a beginner almost everything worked for online lessons.
I was able to convey technical aspects with the same clarity as usual. Once and a while a young student was tired from doing other classes online before i got to them. I only needed to repeat more and work harder at keeping their focus. Occasionally I could not hear tone correctly but mostly I was able discern what they sounded like by watching their hand or bow.
In addition I was driven to make extra videos which I post to YouTube, (suzukiviolinstudio99). I have been more diligent at taking notes that I can email to parents. They can then print them out for the student as a practice guide and reminder of certain points.
Though all the change I have grown as a teacher to meet the needs of my students. I’m thankful.
God bless all of you,
Chris Cavanaugh
